A Ditch in Concord - Painting from Photographs

It’s been winter for what seems like forever. Does that mean I stop making my beloved landscape paintings? Not at all. These are the months that I’m grateful for a trusty camera and long dog walks.

This week the source material for a painting is a photograph by my talented friend Barbara Aiello. I chose this photo “because it looks good” – and then decided to break that down for myself. I like the structure and relationship of the elements. I am inspired here to use color to move the eye around the canvas. I think the content lends itself to some non-traditional application of paint. Subject-wise, my landscape architect self likes the contrast of the dying plant material and the presence of life-giving water. What more could a painter ask for?
