A New Method of Observation

Convergence (oil on canvas, 30" X 30") was first painted in gouache as a small study at a beloved Maine island I visit annually. I was mesmerized by the movement of the seaweed, the rushing and soothing sounds of the water, and the depths beyond.

On a lark I made a two-minute video of the motif. Back in studio sessions, I played the video in a continuous loop on my large monitor. This immersive, repetitive mode of observation introduced new ways of seeing and new ways with paint.
